Faculty of Arts and Humanities

In our faculty, the medium of instruction in the departments of Information and Document Management, History of Science, Philosophy, Psychology, Art History, Sociology, History and Turkish Language and Literature is Turkish. In addition, the Department of History has a separate program that provides education in English. In addition, the Department of Spanish Language and Literature offers Spanish education within our faculty.

There is a compulsory English preparatory class in the Department of History, where the language of instruction is English. In addition, there is a compulsory Spanish preparatory class in the Department of Spanish Language and Literature Department.

Students are obliged to attend lectures with a mandatory minimum 70% attendance requirement, pursuant to the relevant regulation (The Istanbul Medeniyet University Education and Exam Regulation)

In our faculty, quotas are determined by the Istanbul Medeniyet University Senate at the beginning of each fall semester for students who are placed in programs where foreign language education and teaching are not compulsory and who want to take optional English preparatory education. If the number of applications is more than the specified number, the students are ranked from high to low according to the related YKS score type of the program they are placed in, and the student with the highest score according to the relevant score type is admitted to the optional English preparatory program within the determined quota.

Students of our faculty have the opportunity to receive double major or minor education in some departments of our university within the quotas reserved for their departments. However, information on the quota of each department for double major and minor education and information about which departments accept students is announced at the end of each academic year for the next academic year. Applications are evaluated according to the GPA.

Transfers can be made into the equivalent diploma programs of our faculty within the quotas determined by the relevant board of directors.

Transfer quotas for each diploma program, starting from the second semester and including the fifth semester, are decided by the relevant administrative boards in a way that the student quota foreseen in the OSYM Guide does not exceed 15% for each year the quota is announced.

Quotas, conditions determined by the senate, and base scores are announced 15 days before the deadline.

For the student transfers to the programs that accept students with different central exam scores, the student's central placement score in the type of score that is valid for the diploma program that s/he wants to pass as of the year that s/he has entered the central exam should be equivalent to the diploma program that s/he wants to pass, and must not be less than the lowest base score of the diploma programs of other universities in the country.

Departments within our faculty can accept students with lateral and vertical transfer applications.

Students whose weighted grade point average is below 1.80 at the end of the fourth semester / second year are defined as probation students and these students cannot take courses from the fifth semester. These students must leave the probationary situation in order to take courses in the fifth/third year and the following semesters/years. Students on probation repeat the courses they have taken before, excluding the courses they have taken or withdrawn, primarily the courses they have received FF, DD, DC, or YZ grades. The weighted grade point average must be at least 1.80 for the probationary situation to end. The rule regarding the minimum course load is not applied for probation students.

Courses from other departments can be taken within the quotas determined within our faculty. The quotas for the courses offered are determined during the course selection week of each academic year.

Courses with 240 ECTS credits should be taken at the end of 8 semesters as a graduation requirement in the departments of our faculty.

There are no summer school and evening education opportunities in our faculty.

Courses with FF, DZ, YZ letter grades must be repeated. Instead of elective courses to be repeated, other elective courses can be taken within the framework of the curriculum and in the same category/type, with the approval of the advisor. Justified cases are evaluated by the relevant board of directors upon the recommendation of the relevant department chair. Courses with DD or higher grades can be repeated within three semesters following the semester in which the course was taken. This rule does not apply to students who are on probation and for students who have passed all courses for graduation but have not achieved the required grade point average. Regardless of the previous grade in the repeated course, the last grade obtained is valid.

Our faculty members carry out the graduate programs listed below.

A student who is enrolled or enrolled in a Faculty / College can apply for exemption from courses taken and accomplished in a higher education institution. The exemption request is evaluated and resolved by the relevant board of directors, taking into account the opinion of the relevant department chair. Students enrolled in the university have to submit their course substitution and adjustment requests to the head of the relevant department within one month from the start of the courses. Course substitution and adjustment procedures are made according to the current course plan. Course substitution and adjustment procedures are carried out for the unconditionally successful courses.

Each year, all students benefit from food facilities with a 80 % discount while 60 students enjoy 100 % food stipend. 

Turkiye Scholarships

International students can benefit from the allowances of Turkiye scholarships offered by Turkish government. Türkiye Scholarships is a scholarship program which not only provides financial support but also ensures university placement for students in their intended program of application. With this feature, it differs from other scholarship programs in the world. There are KYK dormitories and various private dormitories close to our campus.

Apart from these, students can also benefit from the scholarship opportunities provided by some private institutions.

Students can take a leave of absence with the relevant executive board’s permission for the following reasons: medical, financial, family-related, military service, or domestic/international exchange programs. Students can take a leave of absence for a maximum of four semesters, but the absence can not exceed two semesters at one time.

Students who wish to take a leave should submit a petition describing their excuse along with the necessary documents to their department within the first two weeks of the semester/academic year the latest. However, in the event that the excuse for the leave emerges after this period, a student can make an application at any time.

Students may cancel their enrollment by making an application to the DSA. However, tuitions and/or fees are non-refundable.

Those students who have cancelled their registration or who have been dismissed from the university for some reasons are obliged to follow the disenrollment process determined by the university and to pay any dues (e.g., tuition and fees, library dues or dorm fees etc.) in order to obtain their personal records. 

Those, who are awarded associate degrees or withdraw from their enrolled program without meeting the graduation requirements, forfeit their student rights and they cannot reenroll in their program to complete their studies.
